One Year Celebration!

Hello all 415 of you!

Thanks to those of you that came to McFadden’s on Sunday to root for the Bills as they took on the Houston Oilers…and just in case you weren’t sure, we won. I loved the confused looks on non-Bills fans’ faces as they came into McFadden’s and saw a bunch of people in Bills jerseys watching a taped game from 1992 in March! It was also the debut of the liquor special, which nobody took advantage of but myself, so I drank enough for the rest of you (just ignore that last sentence Mom).

One year Anniversary Celebration!!!
We were planning the Draft party on Saturday April 26th, and we realized that the draft party will be the one year Anniversary of NYCBBB!! Just think, one year ago there were only 20 people reading these emails, now there’s over 415! So we are going to make the 26th – NYCBBB’s Draft and One Year Anniversary Celebration!! We are still working out the details of the drink special but promise it will be long and fun will be had by all!!! Please save the date!!

The Bills signed my favorite past-Bill, fullback Sam Gash this week. You know what this means, my Sam Gash jersey will be coming out of retirement!!!

The Bills contacted us and would like us to put together a mock draft of Bills picks rounds 1-3. Please send me your 3 picks ASAP and I’ll tally them up and send them to our friends at One Bills Drive.

I was thinking of creating a Buffalo Bills shot at McFadden’s. Obviously it should be red or blue. Please send me your ideas of an original concoction!!

Hope all is well with everybody!!!! Remember…April 26th!!!!!

Houston Oilers Comeback game and updates!

Hello all 400 (and still growing!) of ya,

How is everybody enjoying the warmer weather? Tried to have my first BBQ on my new patio last Friday but unfortunately the rain gods didn’t permit me too! Oh well, plenty of warm days of flipping burgers and drinking beers under the hot sun ahead! Below is info on upcoming parties (which require feedback!) and updates in a HUGE week in free agency for our Bills (we got Sam Adams!!!!)

Houston Comeback Party
This Sunday at 1pm, McFadden’s will be showing the greatest comeback of all time! The Bills comeback over the Houston Oilers! Come join us to see the game that many of us never saw due to blackout rules or because those with little faith left the game early! Also, to better help McFadden’s staff for this event, please EMAIL ME if you plan on coming and if you will be coming with guests. It would be a HUGE help to us!

Another HUGE week in Buffalo Bills free agency…the Bills have signed Pro-Bowler and Super Bowl champion Defensive Tackle Sam Adams (29), one of the best (and biggest) Defensive Tackles in the league and will provide 2 massive bodies alongside Pat Williams in the inside for the first time since Ted Washington was here. On a side note, Sam Adams will be living in Ted Washington’s Buffalo home. He is considered the final piece in revamping our defense and making the Bills a solid contender this year! The other big signing is Kicker Rian Lindell (26) from the Seahawks who will replace Mike Hollis who chose not to re-sign. Also signed was Safety Izell Reese (28).

Draft Party
Saturday – April 26th McFadden’s will hold a draft party…details to come!!!

Hope all is well with everybody!!!! GO BILLS!!!!!!!!

News, Updates..and BOOZE!

Hello all 400 of ya!

First to update you on the major upgrades to the team and NYCBBB…then we’ll discuss BOOZE…

Bills Off-season Updates!!!
Exciting times for Bills fans!! The Bills have reached a deal with the Bengals that will bring the best defensive player in free agency, and one of the best linebackers in the NFL, to the Buffalo Bills. Takeo Spikes, 26, will play alongside London Fletcher and newly acquired breakout linebacker from Houston, Jeff Posey, 27…creating a HUGE upgrade to the defense! Also, the Bills are in negotiations with one of the best DT’s in the league, Sam Adams….we’ll have to wait and see what happens with that though…don’t want to jinx anything!!! Regardless, I’m sure Tom Donahoe (cough, GM OF THE YEAR, cough) will bring in the best player he can. Dick LeBeau, former coach of the Bengals and a defensive mastermind, has agreed to become an assistant coach under Gregg Williams.

Also, Peerless Price has been traded to the Falcons for a first round pick (#23) in this year’s draft! This means two things:
1) another upgrade to the team
2) drinking at NYCBBB’s McFadden’s Draft party is going to be a WHOLE lot more fun!!!

Keep checking the links on our website for up-to-date news!

Matt Soreco’s Logo Contest!
Two entries were received for our logo and banner contest. And the winner is…BOTH David Agosto AND Brian Krupkin! Please give them both a round of applause. They both submitted great work.

The new logo and banner are up on the site, so check it out!

OK….onto the BOOZE!!!

Save the Date and Address change

Hello all 400 of ya!

Everybody enjoy the snow this past weekend? Anybody else get annoyed by the typical New Yorkers that moved twice as slow due to the aftermath of the so called “blizzard”? Wimps…

Just a quick email:

SAVE THE DATE: April 26th – Draft Day, We will be throwing our 2nd Annual NYCBBB Draft Day party at McFadden’s on the 1st day of the draft (Saturday). As of now the Bills don’t have a 1st round pick…but with the Franchise Tag being placed on Peerless Price that could all change in the near future. Details about the party will be emailed to you as we put them together.

Looks like Matt Soreco received a good response to the logo contest. Also, be sure to e-mail him if you have interest in going to the Buffalo Destroyer game here in NYC on April 6th.

As always feel free to email me with any comments/suggestions!

Hope everybody is doing well!!!

Hello all 400 of ya!

Just a couple quick announcements in response to some questions I received from you from the last email I sent 2 weeks ago.

Super Bowl
McFadden’s will be offering a special for the Super Bowl this Sunday. All the food you can eat and beer you can drink from 4-10pm for $40. If you want to substitute liquor for beer then make it $50. Shots are not included. If people don’t want to do the drink special and just want a cash bar and want to enjoy the buffet then it is $20 all you can eat. The menu is as follows: Seafood & Sausage Gumbo, Beef and Apple Chipolte Chili served with tortillas and cheese, Spicy and Crispy Buffalo Wings, Smoked BBQ Baby Back Ribs, Corn Meal Breaded Spicy French Fries with Jalapeno Cheese.

Many of you expressed interest in buying a T-shirt. This Thursday, some of the backers are going to meet up at McFadden’s for a couple cold ones during happy hour, including myself. If you’d like to buy a shirt feel free to stop by then and purchase one for $15. If this is not a good time for you, please email me and we’ll work something out.

Buffalo Links
Matt Soreco has done a great job creating a page on our website with Buffalo links. Go check it out! If you have more suggestions let us know!

One of our Backers, Bruce (the red headed Irishman who always stood at the kitchen end of the bar) recently opened a bar/restaurant in the LIRR section of Penn Station named Tracks – Raw Bar and Grill. If you’re ever in Penn or MSG, stop in and have a beer, some raw oysters, or dinner served by an extremely friendly staff.

Hope everybody is doing well!!!

History of the New York City Buffalo Bills Backers

Hello all (400 of ya!),

I hope you all had a nice and safe holidays! We figured that since the first season of NYCBBB is over, we would write and let you know how it was all started, so below is the history of how everything came together to result in the success that we experienced in NYC this year. ENJOY!

Also, we plan on using our web page for anything Buffalo-related in NYC, as a link between former Buffalonians and the Queen City. Please keep checking our site for details and updates and send us any links, events, or info you may have that Buffalonians in NYC would be interested in!

Back in the mid-80’s, Buffalo Bills fans around the city began to meet up at a bar on the Upper East Side to watch their Bills. The name of the bar was originally “Name this Joint”, then the “Rugby Club” and finally “Brother Jimmy’s”. The bar would show the game with the sound on a large screen TV in the back, and lines would form out front to get one the prime seats. However, with each name change of the bar it became less and less of an official Bills bar and after the 2000 season, they decided to change direction and televise all games and give no special treatment to the Bills fans that had patronized them on Sundays for years.

At this same time, I had graduated college (lets go Fordham!) and was looking for a place in the city where I could watch Bills games. I looked on the official Bills site and saw that Mark Bishopp was the President and contact person. Mark had been in charge of the Backers at the old bar for a few years and told me about the upcoming change in the bar policy. Since he travels for his business he has trouble being at every game and asked if I could help him run things. It was agreed upon that I would go to the bar and get email addresses from all the fans there and we would begin to find a new bar. That very weekend I intended on going to the bar to do just that when I missed my train to the city, so I figured I would just go the following weekend.

Unfortunately, that particular Sunday that I missed my train was September 9th, 2001. After 9/11, Mark and I decided that we would wait until the following season to reform the NYC Bills Backers.

During the following off-season, I luckily met Matt Soreco, a native New Yorker and lifelong Bills fan that had never watched a Bills game in NYC with other Bills fans. Matt offered to help Mark and I out, especially with designing a web page. We decided to throw a draft party in April since the Bills had the 4th pick. We posted on message boards and created a web page to get the word out and picked another bar on the Upper East Side for everybody to meet at. Draft day came and we had about 25 Bills fans show up and spent the day watching our team select key college prospects. We made sure we had everybody’s email, started to keep a list, and NYCBBB started to take shape.

We now had a list of Bills fans, a web page, and a promising upcoming season. All we needed was a bar that would show the Bills game with sound and offer an affordable beer and wing special. The three of us spent the summer going to different bars around Manhattan and talking to owners about our group. One of my friends owned a portion of a large bar on East 42nd Street that received a small football crowd on Sundays (I was one of them!). After several emails and beers, the NYCBBB had a new home…McFadden’s! They offered to show the Bills game with sound on a big screen TV and give us a wing/beer special, and most importantly, accommodate us as we grew!

The first game attracted about 20 people. We figured we’d be happy if we got 150 people to show up by the end of the season. Little did we know that we would have more than that within 3 weeks! Every week there were more and more fans showing up, and we experienced growing pains, like running out of wings and beer! By week 9 we had filled McFadden’s with over 350 Bills fans. We decided that we needed to make Sundays at McFadden’s more “Buffalo-ish”, so with your suggestions we brought in Labatt Blue and the owners agreed to start making the wings with Franks Hot Sauce. As one fan said, “being in McFadden’s on Sunday is like being back in Buffalo”.

By season’s end, we had over 400 addresses on our email list and a great foundation to build on at McFadden’s for the 2003 season. We never expected it to grow this much so fast! None of this could have been possible without the spirit of Bills fans in this great city. Planning is already underway for off-season events and for the Buffalo Bills 2003 season, which looks very promising, both for the team and for NYCBBB. Please feel free to keep sending us suggestions.

Cincinnati Bengals RSVP

Hello all 400 of my fellow miserable Bills fans,

Well, I guess the fat woman finally sang, and she sang LOUD yesterday. I’m not even going to try and BS you right now. The Bills are officially out of playoff contention, and next weekend’s game against the Bengals is pretty much meaningless. But as Timmy Lupus proudly says in the movie The Bad News Bears:

I plan on returning from WNY on Friday night so that I can be at McFadden’s for the final game of the season. McFadden’s has gone out of their way to help us this year and it’d be nice if we could support them one last time this season. If you plan on being at McFadden’s on Sunday, can you please RSVP by replying a “HELL YEAH” to this email? I’d like to make sure McFadden’s is staffed accordingly. I’m sending this out early because I know many of you are working different days this week, plus I can check this email from home. PS…sorry to those of you that were unable to email me last week, my email was down for several hours!

We’d like to know if you have any suggestions for the off-season. Some ideas we’re tossing around are a Pro-Bowl party, a Draft party, Sabres activities, a softball/flag football game against the Boston Bills Backers….email me if you have any suggestions or if anything above interests you, or post on our message board.

Also, start thinking of good suggestions for next year’s season of NYCBBB.

Buffalo Bills TNT movie tonight!

Hello all 400 of you,

Just a quick note…tonight at 8:00pm on TNT, the movie “Second String” which is about a Buffalo Bills team that loses its starters to food poisoning before the playoffs and the second string (hence, the obvious title) has to take over and lead the team through the playoffs. Many ex-Bills appear in the movie and Van Miller does the play-by-play for the game scenes.

For more details/review and up to date news, check out Steve Saslow’s (who was at McFadden’s last week) site.
